Fight the Summer Slide Challenge 2019
Students Entering Grades 5th - 8th
We are excited to announce the 3rd annual “Fight the Summer Slide” challenge that will run for nine weeks from Monday, July 1st through Monday, September 2nd. Students will bring their district-issued iPads home this summer, and have the opportunity to read various digital books, practice their math skills and engage in programming and coding games and challenges. Although it is important that students spend the summer enjoying time with family and friends, playing outdoors, participating in camps and other activities, we also hope they will spend time participating in these important academic activities to avoid the summer slide!
All incoming 5th, 6th 7th, and 8th grade students will have the opportunity to use the reading program LightSail, the math program Mathspace and the coding platform kidOYO to enhance their reading, math and coding skills during the summer. These programs were utilized by students during the school year, and students will now have the opportunity to use them at home during the summer months. All of these programs are easily accessible through Classlink, which students have been using throughout the school year. Additionally, we have secured the help of a staff member to monitor students’ use of these programs over the summer in an effort to support the quality of their work.

Incoming 5th Graders: All incoming 5th grade students reading outside of the LightSail program, (paper book, Sora, and/or myON) click on the link below for a reading log to be used to record summer reading. Hand this log proudly into your classroom teacher in September to show all of your summer reading progress. Remember - This is only for reading done outside of the LightSail program.
Incoming 6th, 7th and 8th Graders: While we encourage all incoming middle school students (6th, 7th and 8th graders) for the 2019-2020 to read as many books as possible this summer and if possible participate in the Summer Slide Challenge 2019, students are only required to read one book and complete a graphic organizer on at least one of the books that they read this summer.
Students are permitted to read a book from LightSail, Sora, myON, and/or a paper book. When students return to school in September, 7th and 8th grade English teachers will use some time in the first two weeks of class to review the book(s) that they have read. This will give students the opportunity to ask any questions before handing the graphic organizer in on SEPTEMBER 25, 2019. This assignment will count as a quiz grade. Additionally, teachers may require students to participate in a book discussion, share a book review and/or participate in an in-class writing assignment which will count as an additional quiz and/or test grade.
